The Engineering by Design Club has been selected as a state winner for the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest. Mr. Craig Curfman is the teacher advising team members Maurizio Amato, Carson Foor, Kahleb Horton, Max Summers, Joe Summers, Bentley Zimmerman, and Ian Zimmerman. The team developed a way that a radio-frequency identification transponder can activate solar-powered warning lights to alert motorists a school bus is stopped ahead. With the state level win the team will receive $20,000 worth of technology and a change of winning a $100,000 grant.
The contest was entered by submitting an application in the fall. In December, state finalists were selected to submit an activity plan. The team now will submit project videos by February 15th. Ten national finalists will attend a pitch even where they demonstrate their prototype before a panel of judges in April. Three national winners will be selected.
Congratulations Engineering by Design Club! You make us Panther Proud!

Middle School was selected as one of only two schools to participate in the first Penn State Altoona Girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) and the Arts program on Friday, 11/3/17. This pilot program focuses on exposing junior high girls who are exceptional in math and science to the world of opportunities available to them in the Technology and Engineering industries of the STEM fields. Girls participating in this program will experience real-world applications of computer science, data analytics, and engineering, will get hands-on with puzzles and experiments performed with faculty members, and will tour the campus engineering labs. They will also start a project proposal process that will carry them through to the spring and summer events, where they will start designing/creating their own STEM-related projects.”
