Dear Student & Parents/Guardians:
We look forward to serving you in the school cafeteria! This webpage contains a lot of information to help you take full advantage of our programs.
School Breakfast and Lunch are proven healthy choices. It is well documented that students who eat meals through the National School Breakfast and Lunch Program consume 3 times as many dairy products, twice as much fruit, and seven times the vegetable amounts compared to meals that were brought from home. The research also concludes that school meals are lower in fat and provide more nutrients and more variety than meals brought from home.
Northern Bedford school cafeterias are meeting tough federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school.
School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size. School meals are required to meet the following standards:
- Age-appropriate calorie limits
- Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce)
- A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
- Fat-free or 1% milk
- Whole grains
- And less sodium
The price of our lunch is $2.60 for a secondary lunch and $2.50 for an elementary lunch. Breakfast cost $1.20 district wide. This continues to be a bargain, when compared to the cost of a meal at fast food restaurants.
Please contact the food service office directly if your child requires any medically necessary accommodations due to a food allergy or intolerance. A medical form for special dietary needs is located on the left hand column of this page.
If your family needs help paying for school meals, we’ll be happy to help you apply for free or reduced priced meal benefits. You can apply online at www.schoolcafe.com. Please call us if you have any question or need assistance completing the application.
We make daily efforts to address the nutritional needs of our customers. Our meals provide less than 10% from saturated fat, 1/3 of the recommended Dietary Allowances of protein, vitamins A and C, iron and calcium. We offer whole grains, low fat dairy choices, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Offering healthy choices is easy; however, getting our customers to eat them is our greatest challenge! Please help us by encouraging healthy lifestyles at home and in the classrooms. Together, we can help students learn to make healthier choices that will last a lifetime.
Healthy Regards,
Jennie Miller
